Referring to a Dog as a Mutt - Good or Bad? I not only have mutts, I grew up with them and I'll never forget how happy they make me. I'm sure many dog lovers do this too.Īctually, when I think of mutt, it kind of gives me that warm fuzzy feeling. So, I'm using this so-called "offensive" term in an endearing manner.Įven when I had pure breed dogs, I still used mutt when I was talking to them or even when I was talking to other people.

I sure don't say "You silly German Shepherd mix". When I'm talking to our dogs, it's not unusual for me to say something like "You silly mutt". I won't really say what I think of political correctness, but, in my opinion, it has gotten way out of control. The one that doesn't make any sense to me is political correctness. But they do have lineage! It may be a large variety, but there's nothing wrong with that. They just don't have the lineage that these other type of dogs do. In my opinion, mutts are as good or better than any pure breed or designer dog. Designer dogs are a completely discussion and I'll probably do a post on that soon. Now, if you plan on showing a dog at something like one of the AKC dog shows, then yes, you want a pure breed dog. I would never consider a mutt or mixed-breed dog as inferior to pure breeds or designer breeds. Two of these potential reasons really bother me. I can unstand the reasoning behind most of these even though I may not agree with them. Historical negative usage of the term such as relating to the poor or not being very smart.Political correctness deems this as offensive.Mutt leads some people to think of the dog as inferior as compared to pure breeds or designer dogs. The term mutt just doesn't sound good or nice.Since I don't think mutt is an offensive term, I really can't provide the answer.ĭoing some research, I found some possible reasons, but I'm sure there are more. Of course, some people use mutt to describe people and I would consider that rude, but this post is only looking at dogs.Īccording to Wikipedia, the terms mutt, mongrel and mixed-breed all relate to the same meaning, so it's really a personal preference as to which one you use, if any. Now, I would never tell another person that their dog is a mutt, but it doesn't bother me to call our dogs mutts. I was really surprised that a lot of people appear to be offended by the term "mutt" when it comes to dogs.
